Charleston flood and humidity data
The Charleston Harbor gauge now reaches minor flood stage on about 51.5 days a year, roughly double the 26.3 it averaged over 1992-2020. The air is the other half: about 140 days a year at the airport have an average dew point of 65°F or higher. Here is the record, by year, month and ZIP code.
Days per year the harbor reached minor flood stage (7 ft)
Average days at minor flood stage, by month
What we found
- Tidal flooding roughly doubled. 26.3 days a year at or above 7 feet over 1992-2020, 51.5 over 2016-2025. The peak year was 2019, with 75 days. Days at the moderate stage of 7.5 feet averaged 14.8 a year over 2016-2025.
- Fall is flood season at the gauge. October averages 10.2 days at minor flood stage and September 7.9, when the seasonal high tides line up with fall winds.
- 2026 so far: 29 days at minor flood stage and 7 at moderate through September 30, 2026.
- The highest crests on the National Weather Service list: 12.52 feet in Hurricane Hugo (September 22, 1989), 9.92 feet on September 11, 2017 and 9.86 feet on December 17, 2023.
- Muggy most of the warm season. June through September each average 26 to 30 days with a dew point of 65°F or more. The count has stayed in a steady band since 1973, between 108 and 165 a year.
- Rain comes in bursts. The airport averaged 53.2 inches a year over 2016-2025. The wettest day on record there was 11.5 inches on October 3, 2015, part of a 15.92 inch three-day total. 2026 has been dry: 28.03 inches through October 27, 2026, against 46.26 in an average year by that date.
- Flood claims cluster on the water. 20,687 NFIP claims in the three counties, $337 million paid, an average of $23,575 per paid claim. 12% of paid claims were rated outside the high-risk zones.

How we built this
Tides. Every verified high tide at NOAA CO-OPS station 8665530 (Charleston, Cooper River Entrance) from 1980 on, in feet above mean lower low water. A day counts when its highest tide reached the National Weather Service flood stage for gauge CHTS1: minor 7 feet, moderate 7.5, major 8. Years with large gaps are left out, which leaves 44. NOAA publishes its own high tide flooding counts using a different, national threshold, so its numbers are lower than ours.
Humidity. NOAA NCEI Global Summary of the Day for Charleston International Airport (72208013880), daily mean dew point, 1973 to 2025. Relative humidity is our calculation from the daily mean temperature and dew point.
Rain. Daily precipitation at Charleston International Airport (GHCN USW00013880) via NOAA's Applied Climate Information System, 1938 to October 27, 2026.
Claims and housing. OpenFEMA FIMA NFIP redacted claims and disaster declarations for Charleston, Berkeley and Dorchester counties. US Census ACS 2020-2024 5-year estimates by ZIP Code Tabulation Area. The NFIP data covers flood insurance only; most water damage inside homes comes from leaks and is never in it.
Limits. One tide gauge and one airport don't describe every street. Flooding in a given neighborhood depends on drainage, elevation and rain as much as the harbor level. Use this to understand the area, not to judge a particular house.
